Beauty

I find the ideas in Ameila Jones essay to be very thought provoking as a practicing artist. I personally struggle to put a definition on the word beauty or what criteria a thing has to have to be deemed beautiful, I feel it is a subjective idea as unique as the person viewing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The quote is said to be paraphrased from a statement by the Greek philosopher Plato.  Hi all, I'm Alexis Randolph. I have lived in Colorado my entire life. I grew up at Copper Mountain Resort. I have worked guiding horseback rides, operating heavy equipment, and running one of the resort maintenance parts rooms. I'm a single mom of 3. One starting college, one in kindergarten and one in preschool. I'm a fine Arts major with an AA and welding certificate from PCC. I work in ceramics, jewelry, coming soon more sculpture.  The art work I selected is a piece by David Smith. He was an American metal sculptor. This particular piece is Cubi VII and was made in 1963. Smith did several pieces in this style. I absolutely love his use of line and shape. I like the asymmetrical balance and scale of this piece. Smith also created a beautiful unity between the shapes with the finish he applied to the piece, the marks left by the grinder over the entire piece and the others in this series give them a lot of dimension.  David Smith Cubi VII https://www.artic.edu/artworks...
